Everyone has been talking about how OSS can generate revenue.

Slashdot has an article saying, “How can vendors offer free enterprise software and be financially strong enough to provide commercial support? It’s all about hybrids, says expert Julie Hanna Farris. Find out how to determine if a commercial open source vendor has the chops to support products in the long term.”

This really is a good business model in that:

  1. Giving the software away for free helps build wide adoption (if it’s any good)
  2. Charging for support/install/maintenance is a great way to generate under-market revenue

Other things OSS include the OpenSource Router project. The current release is available for download from Vyatta’s web site.
